Daniel Tak Mao Chan obtained his MBBS, MD, and DSc from the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He became Personal Chair Professor in 2005, and Chief of Nephrology in 2010.
His research in lupus nephritis and viral hepatitis in patients with kidney diseases has contributed to improved clinical management and patient outcomes. He has helped establish mycophenolate as standard-of-care for lupus nephritis. Translational studies from his laboratory have increased the understanding of mechanisms contributing to inflammation and fibrosis in the kidney, and the differential effects of medications. His publications have appeared in N Engl J Med, J Am Soc Nephrol, Kidney Int, Arthritis Rheum, Nat Rev Nephrol, Hepatology, and Transplantation. He is lead author for the lupus nephritis chapter in the forthcoming KDIGO Clinical Management Guidelines, and is co-author of chapters on hepatitis B and kidney disease/transplantation in UpToDate. He is author of the chapter on Far East in Brenner and Rector’s The Kidney.
His previous roles include Senate member and Medical Faculty Associate Dean at HKU, President of Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology (APSN), and ISN Council member. He is now member of HKU University Selection & Promotion Committee, and Vice-President of the Hong Kong College of Physicians.
