Update Course Presentation title: Interventional Nephrology is an awesome sub-specialty

Interventional Nephrology is a growing and exciting area of nephrology.

Renal biopsy was the earliest intervention.  Renal biopsy has varying indications: initial investigation of renal diseases; monitoring progress in disease management and renal transplant function.

With worldwide dialysis numbers growth, services have expanded in to smaller and remote centres.  Patients’ needs have required access for dialysis support at significant distances from the centralised and hospital based surgical and radiological centres.

Temporary haemodialysis lines were invariably placed by nephrologists and trainees in nephrology.  Progress in access line technology and changing service demands have led to cuffed (tunnelled) haemodialyses lines and peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion being placed by nephrologists.  Similarly vascular access angioplasty and endovascular stenting of fistulae to maintain patency of haemodialysis access have fallen more on to the nephrologist.

There is no formal RACP training curriculum recognised for interventional nephrology.

Trainees may not be aware of the of this exciting opportunity in personal skill development, career diversification and ensuring occupational pleasure.

This presentation is designed to expose the attendee to the awesome opportunities in the growing super-speciality of interventional nephrology
